1. Cracked or Lifted Shingles
Hail and high wind are the two biggest shingle killers on the Gulf Coast. Hail bruises shingles and knocks off the protective granules, while wind lifts shingle edges and breaks the sealant strip underneath. Once that seal is broken, the next storm can peel shingles right off.
Walk around your home and look for shingles that are cracked, curled, or missing altogether. Check your gutters and downspouts for piles of shingle granules, which look like coarse black sand. Heavy granule loss means your shingles are wearing out and may not survive another hailstorm.
2. Clogged or Damaged Gutters and Downspouts
Gulf Coast storms drop leaves, branches, and debris by the truckload. When gutters clog, water backs up under the roof edge and pours over the sides, soaking your fascia, soffit, and foundation. In a heavy downpour, a clogged gutter can pull away from the house entirely.
Before storm season, clean out your gutters and make sure downspouts carry water at least a few feet away from your foundation. Look for sagging sections, rust spots, or joints that have separated. If your gutters overflow every time it rains hard, they may be undersized or pitched wrong.
3. Algae, Mold, and Moisture Damage
Our heat and humidity create the perfect conditions for algae and mold. Those black streaks you see on roofs around Fort Bend County are algae feeding on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. Beyond looking bad, algae holds moisture against the shingle surface and shortens its life.
Trapped moisture is worse. Poor attic ventilation lets humid air condense under the roof deck, which can rot the decking and grow mold inside your attic. If your attic feels like a sauna in summer, your ventilation needs attention before storm season adds even more moisture to the mix.
4. Sagging Rooflines
A sagging roofline is a serious warning sign. Repeated heavy rains can saturate damaged decking, and long-term leaks weaken the wooden structure underneath. What starts as a slight dip between rafters can become a structural problem if ignored.
Stand back from your home and look along the ridge line. It should be straight. Any dips, sags, or wavy sections mean the decking or framing underneath is compromised. This is not a wait-and-see situation, so call a roofer right away if you spot sagging.
5. Loose or Damaged Flashing
Flashing is the metal that seals roof joints around chimneys, vents, skylights, and valleys. Wind-driven rain, which we get plenty of during tropical storms, finds every weak point. Corroded, bent, or missing flashing lets water run straight into your home.
Check the flashing around anything that pokes through your roof. Look for rust, gaps, or pieces that have lifted in the wind. Re-sealing or replacing flashing is a small job, but it prevents some of the most expensive interior water damage we see.
6. Exposed or Loose Fasteners
Texas heat makes roofing materials expand and contract every single day. Over time, that movement works nails and screws loose. Exposed fastener heads are tiny entry points for water, and on metal roofs, loose fasteners can let entire panels rattle and lift in high wind.
